BikeIt!

Albuquerque weather, the city bike path system and not least UNM's park-like campus make bicycling an ideal alternative to driving. For great information on city bike trails, bicycle safety, and bicycle advocacy, check out the city bike web page at www.cabq.gov/bike .

Parking and Transportation Services is commited to making cycling on -and off- campus an integral part of our drive for sustainability. Cycling is fun; healthy and has a zero impact on the environment. We want to make it the obvious choice for short-distance commuting and to this end we've already introduced some innovative initiatives.

UNM Campus is now safer for bikes -official!
The latest figures for on-campus bike theft are significantly down and reflect the positive results of UNMPD's continuing war on campus bike and vehicle crime. Lieutenant Patrick Davis said "We are please to report that bicycle theft rates on campus have continued to fall over the past 3 years.
2006: 142
2007: 101
2008: 48
"As you can see, we have made some huge strides, and we wholeheartedly support the new initiatives PATS has undertaken to assist with this problem. I am confident that the new bike lockers installed last year played a role in this decrease.

UNMPD's Finest: Lieutenant Patrick Davis

"Other measures initiated by the Police Department have included the use of crime analysis to identify patterns in these crimes so that we can focus our resources when 'hot spots' emerge; we focus on repeat offenders -- often by alerting officers when they are released from jail and by conducting regular surveillance of them so that we can catch them in the act; and an increased public education campaign conducted with student groups, student orientation sessions and through the media."

Though no official statistics of comparable thefts immediately outside campus are available, Lieutenant Davis says the campus figures are notably lower. Between UNMPD's presence; PATS enforcement officers; bike lockers and the new secure bike park, bicycles on campus have never had it so good!

Bicycling Safety Tips

  • Wear a helmet
  • Never use a cell phone while riding -unless using a hands-free device
  • Ride at a safe speed for road conditions
  • Have your brakes adjusted and working properly
  • Stop at stop signs
  • Ride on the right side of the roadway
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Ride in the correct direction in one-way areas
  • Use lights when riding after dark

While riding your bicycle, you're pretty much bound by the same rules as other road traffic, so obey all traffic laws and buy and wear a bicycle helmet. Wearing a helmet can greatly reduce the risk of head injuries and death. However, even the best helmet has limitations. Defensive cycling is the key to bicycle safety. Every person riding a bicycle on a street or highway has all the same rights and responsibilities as the driver of a motor vehicle, you may be cited for running stop signs, riding at an unsafe speed for conditions, riding on the wrong side of the road or upon sidewalks, wearing headphones while riding, talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device, not having legal brakes, etc.
