All members 21+ will also have access to Zipcar's network of more than 5,500 vehicles throughout the North America and the UK.
"Anyone who bikes or rides the bus to UNM can benefit from this new program," UNM PATS Director Clovis Acosta said. "Faculty and staff who use alternative transportation don't have to drive to UNM anymore if they have an appointment off campus."
Members receive their own "prox card," and when they need a vehicle they reserve it either online or by phone. The vehicles are available at an hourly or daily rate which includes gas, vehicle insurance, maintenance, 24/7 roadside assistance and 24/7 customer support, if necessary.
UNM departments can now apply for membership. To learn how, download the online guide.
Five vehicles - three Honda Civics, a Toyota Sienna Minivan, and a MINI Cooper - will be located throughout campus available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you're 18 or older, you're eligible to be a member. Hourly rates start at $9 and include gas, insurance and 180 free miles.
Among the dozens of colleges that have partnered with Zipcar include MIT, Columbia, Georgetown, Ohio State, Arizona State University, American University, Harvard University, University of Minnesota, University of Toronto, University of North Carolina and The University of Chicago.
N.B. Make sure you book enough time with the Zipcar vehicle for your needs.

Latest Zipcar News: Improved Gas Card announcement.
"Get out your best bubbly and raise a glass -our newest addition has finally arrived! [Remember: don't drink and drive -you might spill it.] Starting Monday, July 14th 2008, the more stylish, more reliable and more efficient gas card will begin appearing in the Zipcar visor organizer. (You know, the organizer on the drivers side visor that holds important stuff like the parking pass). Every Zipcar will have the new card in the next week or so.
There isn't a whole lot we can do to make filling the tank more fun, but we can make it easier. Here's how it works:
1. Locate your Zipcard number (it's printed directly on your Zipcard).
2. Before exiting the vehicle, check your Zipcar's odometer for its mileage (don't forget to check before exiting to avoid having to go back and get it!)
3. Swipe the gas card at the pump. Enter your Zipcar's mileage, and then enter your Zipcard number (when prompted for your "Driver ID"). How easy is that?
4. Fill 'er up with free fuel (please use regular gas unless your car demands premium). Continue on your way.
The most important thing to remember is to use your Zipcard number as the "Driver ID". If you visit www.zipcar.com/gas, you can view a little film we've made to help ease the transition. It's a cinematic gem, and just may answer any questions you might have. If you have more, don't hesitate to email us at info@zipcar.com.
See you on the road soon,
