New LPR Technology modernizes campus parking & supports UNM sustainability goals
By Joshua Whitman, PATS Marketing Representative
Starting this Academic Year 2025-2026 (AY25-26), The University of New Mexico’s Parking & Transportation Services (PATS) is incorporating License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology into its operations. This advancement marks a shift to virtual parking permits for both Campus Residents and Commuter zones. Here’s what you need to know:
What is License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology?
LPR is a camera-based technology that scans and identifies vehicle license plates. At UNM, LPR is used to verify virtual permits by matching license plates to PATS records – eliminating the need for physical decals and enabling faster, more accurate enforcement.
What does this mean for our UNM community?
- Convenience: Your license plate is your parking permit. Customers no longer need to display physical decals. Virtual permits will apply to the following zones:
- Campus Resident zones: "R", "GR", "T", "INS" (Rainforest), "S" (Lomas) and "Y" (Yale).
- Commuter zones: “K” and “South Lot.”
- Efficiency: LPR simplifies the parking permit process, reduces paperwork, and minimizes administrative tasks – allowing for faster and more reliable enforcement.
- Sustainability: This transition supports UNM 2040 Goal 4: Sustainability by reducing plastic and paper waste tied to physical decals. This change reflects The University’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
At UNM, your license plate is your parking permit. Just Park & Go – no decals, no hassle. The new system not only reflects technological innovations but also aligns with UNM’s mission to build a smarter, greener campus for the future.
